Bystander Intervention

It is on all of us to help keep each other safe. Here are some tips:

  • When going out with friends, make sure to check in with each other throughout the event and after leaving.
  • Always be alert.
  • Trust your instincts. If a situation feels wrong, it probably is.
  • Remember the three D's of being a good bystander!
    • Direct: Directly inserting yourself into a potential situation and stopping it by addressing the people involved (asking someone if they are OK, walking an intoxicated friend out of a party, telling someone their jokes are offensive)
    • Delegate: If you feel unsafe or uncomfortable stepping in, getting someone who might be better equipped (getting security to remove someone who is being aggressive, telling an RA that you're concerned about your roommate's relationship, asking a friend who is closer to a classmate than you are to check in on them)
    • Distract: Distracting those involved before the situation escalates (asking someone who is uncomfortable to help you find your keys, spilling water on the floor near two people in an argument, asking someone who is making someone else uncomfortable if you know them from a class
