About Chief Calloway

Chief Terence M. Calloway, MJA, currently serves as Florida A&M University's (FAMU) Assistant Vice President of Campus Safety and Security, serving as Emergency Manager and Chief of Police. He has over 24 years of law enforcement experience. Before becoming FAMU's Chief of Police, he served Austin Peay State University from 2012-2013 as the Chief of Police/Director of Public Safety. Calloway has served as a Patrol Officer, DARE Officer, School Resource Officer, Vice Officer, and Lieutenant during his law enforcement career. In 2015, Chief Calloway was selected as the 2015 State Law Enforcement Chief's Association "Leader of the Year." Chief Calloway completed the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Emergency Management Institute (EMI) National Emergency Management Advanced Academy (NEMAA) in 2018 and the National Emergency Management Executive Academy (NEMEA) in 2019.

Advancements and Accreditations

During Calloway's leadership tenure, the department has experienced many advancements: a reduction in crime over the last five years; enhanced technology by outfitting each police officer with mobile data terminals to improve communication and response times through updated communications and 911 equipment; and improved relationships with the campus and Big Bend communities.

Most notably, he helped the department ascertain accreditation with all three law enforcement accrediting agencies. FAMU Department of Campus Safety and Security (DCSS) is the first and the only historically black college and university (HBCU) law enforcement agency to be accredited by three separate law enforcement accrediting bodies: the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc. (CFA), the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Accreditation (IACLEA), and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. (CALEA).

Calloway has a passionate interest and focus on the leadership development of his staff. While at FAMU, he has re-energized the police department and advanced its reputation as a respected police department through training, discipline, accountability, and stimulating creativity and growth. Calloway is also passionate about the concept of community policing that is at the heart of the culture within DCSS through a more proactive and engaging style of policing with a robust visible campus presence.

Education

Calloway holds a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from David N. Myers University, a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Tiffin University, and is a Ph.D. candidate in Education Leadership at FAMU's College of Education. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy Session 244, FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar (LEEDS), and FBI Great Lakes Leadership Seminar (GLLS), Florida's Chief Executive Seminar Class 49.
