Established and promulgated through Florida State Statute 1012.97, FAMU sworn officers have complete police authority to apprehend and arrest anyone involved in illegal acts on campus and areas immediately adjacent to the campus.
If minor offenses involving University rules and regulations are committed by a University student, officers may also refer the individual to the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution/Dean of Students. Major offenses may involve joint investigative efforts with other local and state law enforcement agencies.
The prosecution of all criminal offenses, both felony and misdemeanor, are conducted at county, state and federal court levels.
The Florida A&M University Department of Campus Safety & Security Operation Division, overseen by the Administrative Lieutenant, consists of the Uniform Patrol Operations Division, Administrative Support Services Division and all Investigative functions for the department.
All DCSS officers are state certified and professionally trained, with the same authority and rights as any officer in Florida.
The Administrative Support Services Division includes Crime Prevention, Communications, School Resource Office, Evidence and Set Team.
The Criminal Investigations Unit is tasked with following leads developed during the initial reporting of criminal activity to University Police.
The Communications Unit is staffed by police communications operators (PCOs) that are certified by Florida’s Department of Health and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement
The Records Unit is responsible for compiling, maintaining and disseminating information from police records regarding both incident and traffic reports.
CSA's include individuals who provide security at a campus parking kiosk, monitor access into a campus facility, act as event security or escort students around campus after dark.
FAMU OPT has taken proactive measures to ensure that the parking experience while here on the campus is both safe and worry-free.
When students, faculty and staff are prepared for emergencies, the impact to the University can be reduced, and the recovery process can be quicker.
The presence of an SRO on campus provides opportunities for positive experiences between law enforcement and students.
